Red Zone “Critical Time”:
Access to “Red Zones” (Start and Finish) will be limited during specific times (“Critical Time”) to only persons critical to operations in the red zone during this time. Critical Time includes the elite / wheelchair start, elite / wheelchair finish, and any other times determined critical to event operations or TV production. These times will be determined and announced pre-event. Critical persons will be determined and approved pre-event, and will be provided a unique lanyard for each red zone they have access to. Those area’s managers will distribute the unique lanyard based on a pre-approved list, and will receive specific instruction on how to operate within the Red Zone during critical time. Non-critical personnel without lanyard, even with credential access, will be cleared from Red Zones and not be permitted in these zones during Critical Time (including CEM staff). Security and Medical teams, responding to a security or medical need, do not require the lanyard to enter a Red Zone for an emergency response.
Red Zone Critical Time Schedule:
Start Red Zone: 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. (Columbus Dr., Elite Corral to BP Bridge)
Finish Red Zone: 8:35 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. (Columbus Dr., beginning of Runner Refresh to Roosevelt Rd.)

Safety information
Event Alert System
The Event Alert System communicates the status of course conditions to participants, volunteers and spectators leading up to and on race day. All participants, volunteers and spectators should familiarize themselves with the Event Alert System color indicators, remain alert for directions from race officials, announcers, and volunteer leaders and take precautions to prepare properly for varying weather conditions on race day. Look for EAS communication in the start/finish areas, throughout the event site, aid stations and via public announcements.
Public safety information
You can help maintain public safety in a few simple steps:
- Whatever your role on race day, be aware and check the area around you – observe runners, spectators, and general public. Be vigilant.
- If you are at an aid station, make sure that only your supplies are there and that no one has the opportunity to add to them or tamper with them.
- Keep a look out for bags or packages that appear to be unattended. If in doubt, ask!
- Do not store or hold bags or packages for someone you do not know.
- Report anything or anyone suspicious to your team leader or a police/security officer.
- Be good neighbors and respect the people and community around you; pick up after yourself and keep the noise to a minimum during early hours.
- Help keep the city and parks clean. Please use waste, recycle, and compost stations.
We work with the City of Chicago, Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department and the Office of Emergency Management and Communications throughout all the stages of our planning process. These agencies work in tandem to ensure a safe and secure event.
